GLOSSARIUM
FRAGRANTIAE |
|
|
by Nikolaus Groß |
The „Glossarium Fragrantiae“ is a comprehensive dictionary
(504 pages) that indicates Süskind’s original German
equivalents to seldom and difficult special words of the Latin
translation of the „Perfume“, explains and comments in
Latin many instances from all epochs of Latin literature as well as the
related notions. On one hand this work is indispensable for a
complete understanding of the vocabulary of the translation, on the
other hand it is – independent of the „Fragrantia“
– a true Latin cyclopedia, in its kind a unique book, which
has extraordinary value for all people who like Latin.
In the „Glossarium Fragrantiae“ one can find both the
German words and idioms of the original text and translations of them
into modern languages (English, French etc.) and extensive explanations
and notes, not seldom longer essays with many digressions, anecdotes
and citations from manifold fields of knowledge, first of all
literature, philosophy, history of religions, history, geography,
chemistry, biology, pharmacy, medecine, handicrafts and technics and -
a lot of cooking recipes.
Look here only a few titles of longer essays: abracadabra (origin of
the famous magic word), accipiter (the goshawk, names, behaviour), anas
(the ducks, appearance, behaviour, cooking recipes), anthrax (literary
sources, bible, Homer etc.), Austria (history of this country),
bacchanal (causes and development of a Roman orgy, old Latin
inscription, Livy, etc.), cholera (symptoms, causes, therapy),
coriarius (history of tannery, exact description of techniques), croton
(cascarilla: appearance, usage), Cucania (the land of Cockaigne in
fairy-tales, music, fine arts), Diderot (his life and works),
dysenteria (dysentery: symptoms, causes, progress, therapy), figura
Veneris (coital positions in Lucretius, Horace, Ovidius, Martialis, in
Kamasutra, in Kingpingmeh and Jou Pu Tuan, in the „Aloisia
Sigea“ of Nicolas Chorier, finally in Van der Velde, Kinsey and
Hite). Hugonota (history of the Huguenots), Iesuita (history of the
Society of Jesus), lacerta (lizards: appearance, behaviour), Lapponia
(Lapland: inhabitants, customs, reindeers, Santa Claus etc.), lichen
(structure and importance of lichens), lien (the spleen: structure and
function), masso (history, laws, meaning of the Freemasons),
Mississippium (notes to this stream, with an amusing digression about
Mark Twain’s notorious speech in the „Stomach Club“),
myron (perfume: notion, compounds, history), myropoea (history and
technique of perfume-production), natrix (the grass snake: structure,
life), placenta (Cato’s Roman cakes, modern cake baking recipes:
plum cake, Black Forest cherry tart), rattus (the rat: species,
behaviour, literary reminiscences: E.A. Poe, two rat-songs of J.W.
Goethe, original texts and their Latin translations), ricinus (the male
and the female tick: their life, their aims, their allegorical function
in Süskind’s „Perfume“), Russo (life and
works of Jean-Jacques Rousseau), saccharum (history and technique of
sugar-production), salamandra (newts and salamanders: structure,
behaviour, „salamander“ as a student’s custom),
sericum (history and technique of silk-production), socolata (history
and technique of chocolate-production), syphilis (symptoms, causes,
history, origin, Latin literature: Fracastoro etc.), talpa (mole and
naked mole-rats: structure, behaviour), tilia (the linden tree –
botanical and literary essay: 2 Latin translations of „Am Brunnen
vor dem Tore“, a famous German song), varicellae (chicken-pocks:
symptoms, origin, pocks and chicken-pocks: differences), variolae
(pocks, symptoms, origin), Voltarius (Voltaire – life and
works), zoon polemion (essay about dangerous animals and humans),
De Patricio Süskind (life and works of Patrick
Süskind)... and much more.
This book offers to the reader a colourful garden with a plenty of rare
plants in alphabetic order – from Abracadabra to Zoon polemion.
Finally an essay about life and works of Patrick Süskind. And all
that in a clear Latin easy to understand.
